SEO Mythbusting – Top 5 Things Google Doesn’t Care About

When discussing common SEO fact and fiction, there are a number of key things people *think* Google care about…the truth is, some of these seemingly important points are really not going to affect your Google ranking. Here we break down the top 5 things Google really doesn’t care about when ranking your site.

1. The age of your website
This is a major one! Does Google really care when you registered your site? No, not really! The main thing Google look at is whether your content is helpful to people and that you have links and authority signals to back up your site in terms of relevance. Of course, there is a sort of correlation going on – a site which launched in 2008 and is still going today is likely to have built up many links and authority compared to a site which launched a month ago. However, if you have a relatively new site but have managed to build a strong link profile and authority signals, Google are likely to reward you for getting the same authority in a shorter time.

2. Using Google apps or services
Google definitely do not prioritise users who actively use Google based apps such as GMail and Google docs! There isn’t a way for the algorithm to read your emails or see your personal documents.

3. Social Media likes, shares, tweets etc
You might have a Facebook counter on your site and can see that there have been 18,000 shares on your page. That is a lot of shares, but really Google don’t care! They don’t look at this or use this information at all. In a way, although it does not directly influence your ranking, having a strong social presence can help your SEO as the people sharing your content are also likely to click through other pages of your site, increase the traffic and browser activity! These are all good signs for Google.

4. Bounce rate and time on site
This is an interesting one. Google doesn’t look at the average time people spend on your site, or the bounce rate. It could be that people spend less time on your site because they are able to find the answer faster than on other sites!

5. Shared hosting or other low cost host options
This won’t directly affect your ranking unless your site’s load speed is affected by it. As long as your site loads quickly, it doesn’t matter how your hosting is organised!
