We get a lot of SEO enquiries from businesses who currently have one page websites and wonder why they aren’t getting anywhere with their SEO campaigns. There is a school of thought that single page sites are no good for SEO, and in some ways this is true however, there are some circumstances when one page sites are a good move for your business.
Put really simply, a one page site is a single HTML page where all the necessary sections sit on the one page. There is usually a menu bar (as you would see on the vast majority of sites), but by clicking on different menu options the page will scroll down to the relevant section.
There are certainly some businesses who can find a one page site really works for them – they look super cool and are really on-trend at the moment. There are examples in all areas of web design too, from ecommerce sites to information sites about the local up and coming restaurant for example. When would a one page site suit you?
- Cheap and quick – ideal for either using a web builder or getting an agency to create you a site in double quick time (it works out pretty cheap too)
- Great mobile experience – single page sites adapt really well to mobile devices as the design stays the same! There’s no complex navigational system to re-structure for mobile users, and as the majority of one page templates are responsive by desig, they look as good on phones and tablets too. Scrolling is always a good option on smartphones and tablets too, as it is the natural action instead of pointing and clicking.
- Higher conversion rates – you might find a one page site converts more effectively than a multi-page site, merely because it is easier to find things! The navigation is streamlined to simply scrolling one page instead of being redirected through menus and other pages.
Although we recommend multi-page sites to most of our clients, it is possible to SEO a one page site (although it is not as effective). The main issue with a single page site is the lack of content capability – at the moment, Google is heavily focused on rewarding high quality content, and site with multiple pages have a lot more scope for increasing the quanitity and relevance of their content much more easily then one page sites. One of the main SEO points for single page sites is to really carefully think about the keywords you want to use. Mapping out exactly where you want your keywords to feature will be important, as putting too many or repeats of the same word in a small space will send alarm bells through to the Google bots. Using appropriate headings will be very useful on your one page site, as it not only signals to Google what the topic of the section is, but it makes the layout easier for readers to digest and understand.
