Google MyBusiness: Making the Most of Local Search

What is Google MyBusiness?
Google MyBusiness is a local search tool which helps consumers find information about businesses local to them. For example, if you search for pizza restaurants in {town}, you will likely come up with a map showing the locations of pizza places in that location. This is really helpful to consumers, and surprisingly simple to optimise for the businesses involved! All it takes is some understanding of the best ways to fill in the sections of the Google MyBusiness page.

As you can see, the details of each restaurant are shown along with relevant opening information, the address and any reviews customers have left. It is a handy tool for consumers to use! It makes total sense for businesses to ensure their MyBusiness information is accurate and fully optimised.Google MyBusiness is free to use and it doesn’t replace your website – it does go hand in hand with your website though, allowing localised search results to quickly show your key information and allowing consumers to find your site easily.

Setting Up a MyBusiness Listing
It may be that you already have a MyBusiness listing – if your company has been around for a while, you might have a listing already which needs claiming. The first step is to go onto the Google MyBusiness page for adding and claiming business listings, and put in the most important information; your business name and address. If you already have a listing, it will let you know. Simply fill in the business details, making sure it is all accurate and using correct grammar (make sure your name is in capital letters etc). You have the chance to say if your business provides services or goods at their location – this is important for businesses which provide services away from their head office, such as cleaning companies for example.

Adding and Editing Business Details
To add or change your service area details, you need to sign into MyBusiness using “card view”. If you are viewing your locations as a list, switch to card view by clicking on the cards icon at the right hand side.
  1. Select the listing you want to edit and click “manage location”.
  2. Click “info” from the menu
  3. Select the “Address” section.
  4. A window will appear. Select “yes” next to “I devlier goods and services to my customers at their locations” if this applies to you.
  5. Add service area information by using post codes or cities which you serve, or on a given area around your location.
  6. If you serve customers from your business location, you can select the box “I serve customers at my business address”. This will show your complete address on Google along with stated opening hours.

Once you have made the edits you want to make, you will be asked to verify the changes via email. This means that Google can check that the actual business owner is making the edits, rather than just members of the public. Your changes will not display until your listing has been verified. Verification normally is pretty quick, with most listings verified in less than a week! Here is an example of what this section will look like:

Making the Most of Your Listing
Ensure you enter the most details you can for your listing. Localised search results favour businesses which have the most relevant results for the search queries and businesses which offer the most detailed and accurate answers will be easier to show in search results. Ensure that your listing communicates what your business does, where it is and how customers can get your goods or services – never assume that people will just know what you are about!A good method when writing your business information is to think about the keywords your potential customers will be searching for – very much like traditional SEO. Be sure to include keywords within your MyBusiness listing – after all, your website will be listed along with your MyBusiness information.A key area to make sure is 100% accurate is the opening hours. Be sure to update the opening hours if they change – you can customise hours for holidays and special events such as the festive period, summer or winter opening times etc.Reviews are a powerful part of the MyBusiness listing. Making sure your positive reviews are there is a good way to show that your business is a good choice for customers – create a link to allow customers to write reviews for your company, and try to respond to them if you can.
