So you have just sat down to design your website; you’ve chosen to go with an experienced web designer that you can sit down with and have a long, in depth conversation about where you see the website, what your goals are and what you see it looking like. There are, of course, things that you should always consider asking your designer, and things that I hope they should be asking you.
What industry are you based in?
The place to start is by talking about other websites in your niche. What do they look like? What do you think that your competition is doing well? Are there areas that they’re not doing so well in? Why do you think that is? By starting with a clear idea of what you want, and what you want to avoid, you’re helping your designer out immensely. The second thing to consider is what websites outside of your niche look like. Is there a website out there that has nothing to do with your company that you like the look of? Does it have a strong layout, great fonts or an easy to use interface? All of these aspects help create the site that you want, and would be happy to put your company name on.
One of the key things to consider is the conversion pathway for you potential clients. In other words; what does a sale look like? From the arrival of a client on your website, to them reading about your products, to them choosing one, all the way through to them buying one. What does that process look like? Is it as easy as it should be? Are there any hurdles that can be easily removed to make the process smoother and easier for the customer?
