What is Worth More; the Actual Car or the Car’s Domain Name?
May 21, 2010, 7:41 pmThis week there were two auctions where top dollar was exchanged for property; one kind of property you drive in traffic, and the other kind you drive traffic to. Specifically, the Domainfest and Mecum car auctions.
At the DomainFest Internet domain auction at Fort Lauderdale this week, desirable domain names were put up on the auction block by their respective owners to gather the highest price possible; If there was ever a question that this is a lucrative industry, auctions like this are the answer.
Intellectual property seems to have become more “property” in recent times and current legislation only reflects that ideal. For example, in a recent decision, Domain names were ruled as propertyand can be garnished to pay off a debt. Specifically, in a case involving James Tombas of Canada Incorporated. Mr. Tombas registered the domain name “umbro.com,” and then allegedly asked Umbro International for a lifetime supply of the soccer apparel company’s products, as well as $50,000 for himself and another $50,000 for the Internet-focused charity of his choice.
The clothing manufacturer responded to Tombas’s offer by suing him for trademark infringement.
The decision was upheld in federal court and as a result. the U.S. Circuit Court in Fairfax County has ordered that Tombas’s other domain names be garnished by the registrar, Network Solutions (NSI), then auctioned off in order to pay Umbro’s attorney fees.
Given the prices paid for the domains at this week’s auctions, there can be no doubt that domain and reputation management is more important than ever.
Below are some of the other auction results, and at the bottom of the article I will post the enitre list. Other domains that sold at auction; Dating.com sold for $1.75 million and was the highest bid accepted among the 120 names up for sale at DomainFest.
Jeans.com got a $2 million offer via telephone but resulted in a no sale, BoardGames.com sold for $450,000, Therapists.com sold for $50,000, Antidepressant.com sold for $30,000 GolfResorts.com sold for $22,500 and even outside of the auction, Slots.com sold privately for $5.5 million, to an anonymous buyer.
Later this week Mecum’s Spring Classic Auction will be selling somewhat more tangible property but for similar figures; this classic car auction has cars such as the Iron Man movie Cobras, Charlie’s Angels faux-F1 cars, two Knight Rider KITTs, and even the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE convertible from The Hangover.
Also up for sale is the El Camino from My Name Is Earl. Keep in mind that last October, a 1969 AMC AMX, which was built for a short-lived 1970s detective series, Banacek also customized by George Barris, sold for $90,000.
Earlier this year, the Scottsdale event for Barrett-Jackson Auction netted some high dollar prices; the Ecto-1 From Ghostbusters sold for $88,000.00.
A Batmobile replica sold for $66,000.00, but the Batcycle sold for only $6,600.00. An old Fire Truck sold for $8,250.00 and Dillinger’s Getaway Car sold for $165,000.00.
The earliest known flip-top funny car sold for $176,000.00 and a Porsche tractor sold for $25,300.00. A prototype for the M29 Weasel tank from World War 2, sold for $55,000.00, and a Kaiser Darrin sold for $220,000.00.
These prices, while a high dollar figure, are considered low from an investment standpoint. The domain world suffers from the same market situation.
For example, Palm Beach domain investor Patrick Ohannessian, has owned CommunityCollege.com since 1997. Thursday was the first time he tried to sell it at an auction, and it didn’t sell this time.
His future plans include some reputation and domain management to increase its value; by adding Facebook, making it easier to access on a mobile phone and doing more promotion and traffic drivers, like blog posts, to move to Page 1 of Google search results. It’s currently on Google Page 2 when searching for the term “community college.”
Patrick recently turned down an offer from the owner of Degree.com as it was not where he felt the value was for his name.
If you want to increase the value of your domain names or turn your intellectual property into an online “hot rod”, Metamend has proven reputation management solutions to get you down the road.
Below are the final results from the Domainfest domain auction this week. The auction sold 34 out of 120 domains for a total of $2,466,550 USD, with dating.com being the top sale for $1,750,000.
